Description: The overall purpose of FOA #DD13-003(BD-STEPS) is to identify modifiable maternal exposuresin early pregnancy that may increase the risk for having a pregnancy affected by certain major,structural birth defects. The purpose of this supplemental FOA is to expand the use of theinfrastructure of the Centers for Birth Defects Research and Prevention (CBDRPs) birth defectsresearch program to pilot the identification of modifiable exposures that may increase the risk ofstillbirths with and without major birth defects. Key objectives include: 1) conducting a pilot studyof stillbirths without major birth defects within the CBDRPs, and 2) analyzing previously collecteddata from CBDRP on stillbirths with major birth defects. CDC’s mission is “to promote health andquality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability.” This program is mostclosely aligned with CDC’s Health Protection Goal of “Healthy People in Every Stage of Life.”Quantifiable and measurable outcomes will be measured against the GPRA performance goal to findcauses and risk factors for birth defects in order to develop prevention strategies.

Additional Information on Eligibility:     This competitive FOA supplement is limited to the 6 currently funded grantees for the Centers for Birth Defects Research and Prevention (CBDRP) under exisiting FOA DD-13-003 that have access to both NBDPS and BD-STEPS data.  The 6 currently funded grantees are:  Arkansas Children’s Hospital Research Institute;  University of Iowa; Massachusetts Department of Public Health;  University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill;  New York State Department of Health/HRI;  and Stanford University.  The FOA is limited to these organizations because the activities will directly rely on the funded CBDRPs infrastructure and databases      The currently funded grantees are Higher Education Institutions, State Governments, or Bona Fide Agents of State Governments.
