The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is offering this grant to establish and characterize longitudinal cohorts of infants and/or mother-infant dyads. This grant is for the purpose of determining how influenza infections and vaccinations shape infant and childhood immunity. Specifically, the studies will define and characterize immunity acquired from initial influenza antigen exposure, including in utero, and examine its influence on responses to subsequent infections or vaccines. Projects involving mother-infant dyads will also investigate the role of maternal influenza immune status on neonatal responses. The overall goal is to provide crucial information to facilitate the design of durable, broadly protective influenza vaccines.
