3. Justification for Less than Maximum Competition:
Assistance will be provided only to the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). No other applicants are solicited. In early 2007, the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) created the Task Force for Mass Critical Care During a Disaster, which includes several CDC subject matter experts. This Task Force assembled in January 2007 with the mission of developing recommendations to promote optimal care for the critically ill during a mass disaster. The manuscripts that resulted from this meeting helped advance mass critical care surge capacity and standards of care planning in the U.S. and internationally. However, there is a need for expansion of topics discussed to provide information for a variety of patient populations to include pediatric, nephrology, trauma, and obstetrics groups; lessons learned from the H1N1 influenza pandemic and other recent disasters such as earthquakes, tornados, and hurricanes; disaster planning at the State level; surge capacity and reallocation of scarce resources; and key issues with disaster medicine.
