This grant, offered by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, supports the North Slope Digital Land Cover Evaluation Project. Its purpose is to evaluate LandFire classifications across Alaska’s North Slope to accurately determine vegetation classes. This initiative aims to produce a consistent digital land cover product crucial for efficiently identifying landscape changes and downscaling global climate change models regionally. Current LandFire products hinder effective data comparison. Following established protocols, this project will generate an accurate, North Slope-wide land cover product, foundational for evaluating vegetation associations throughout Alaska and similar areas.

Description: | This proposed project will result in a North Slope-wide evaluation of the LandFire classifications and the accurate determination of vegetation classes that then can be utilized as the base for producing an accurate and consistent land cover digital product for the North Slope, and other areas in Alaska. The added value of having such information will result in more efficiency in determining factors of change and will provide the basis for the downscaling of global climate change models to a regional base. The current LandFire product makes it impossible to compare data and evaluate landscape level changes. Protocols have been developed through a facilitated process over the past 18-months. These protocols are to be followed in evaluating the LandFire data and determining individual land cover associations that can be applied in the future to an accurate North Slope-wide land cover product and provide the basis for utilizing land cover data to evaluate individual vegetation associations throughout Alaska. |
