Additional Information

Agency Name: Bureau of Reclamation – Lower Colorado Region
Description: In 1995, the bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was down listed from federally endangered to threatened. On July 6, 1999 (64 FR 35454) the Fish and Wildlife Service proposed that due to the recovery of the species from the population lows experienced in the 1970’s, the eagle should be down listed. As with other populations in the lower 48 United States, eagles in Arizona have experienced a population increase from a low of three known breeding areas in 1971 to 62 in 2011.

The primary purpose of this project is for the Bureau of Reclamation and Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) to enter into a cost-sharing agreement to provide funding and support for the management and conservation to an ongoing bald eagle management program. The program is to perform nest-watches and searches within the Lake Pleasant and Tonto Breeding areas of Arizona, as well as other areas if funding permits, where eagles are observed. Leg bands will be placed and resighted, and eagles will be captured and readiotagged.
