The BLM CA department is offering this grant to construct a precipitation model focusing on the past and future populations of the federally endangered Lane Mountain Milkvetch (Astragalus jaegerianus Munz). This rare plant, listed as endangered in 1998, is narrowly endemic to small, fragmented populations found exclusively on granite outcrops within the central Mojave Desert. A substantial portion of these critical populations, approximately two-thirds, are located inside the U.S. Army’s National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California. This grant is for the vital purpose of developing a robust model that will enhance understanding of how historical and future precipitation patterns impact the distribution and health of the Lane Mountain Milkvetch, providing essential data for its ongoing conservation and management.

Description: | The Lane Mountain milkvetch, Astragalus jaegerianus Munz (Fabaceae), is a narrowly endemic plant that exists in small fragmented populations restricted to granite outcrops in the central Mojave Desert. Approximately two-thirds of all known A. jaegerianus populations occur within the boundaries of the U.S. Army¿s National Training Center at Fort Irwin, approximately 50 km NE of Barstow, CA (Charis 2002). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS 1998) listed A. jaegerianus as a federally endangered species in 1998. |
