This grant is for performing research and studies in wildland fire and resource management. The primary purpose is to develop advanced products and tools, specifically meteorological forecasts, that will aid decision-making at all levels and help achieve the objectives of the National Fire Plan. Grantees will utilize cutting-edge experimental models, including the Penn State/NCAR mesoscale Model 5 and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model, to create new forecasting capabilities. The aim is to improve critical decision-making processes related to wildland fire management, encompassing aspects like fire weather, smoke dispersion, transport, fire danger, and fire behavior. Further model development may also be undertaken if additional funding becomes available.
