The BLM is offering this grant to address the significant declines observed in sensitive amphibian species, including the northern leopard frog, great basin spadefoot toad, and boreal toad, across Wyoming. These populations have been severely impacted by various factors, notably the prevalence of chytrid fungus (Bactrachochytrium dendrobaditis or B.d.), which has caused large-scale die-offs. This grant is for conducting PCR analysis of amphibian swab samples to ascertain the extent of B.d. infections across BLM field offices. Additionally, the project will involve collecting, cataloguing, and securely storing amphibian DNA. This initiative aims to enhance understanding of disease prevalence and population dynamics, providing critical data to facilitate effective management and conservation strategies for these vulnerable amphibian species throughout their range.

Description: | A. Project background information The BLM currently manages habitat for 3 amphibian species which are on the BLM sensitive species list: northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens), great basin spadefoot toad (Scaphiopus intermontanus), and the boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas). All 3 of these amphibian species have experienced declines throughout their range due to a number of factors. Prevalence of disease (especially chytrid fungus (Bactrachochytrium dendrobaditis or B.d.)) has caused large die-offs of the boreal toad and northern leopard frog. The BLM is interested in understanding the extent of chytrid fungus infections across the field office. We are also interested in collecting DNA information on species? populations that will allow us to understand population dynamics and facilitate management of these species across their range in Wyoming. B. Project objective The project will involve performing PCR analysis of amphibian swab samples for B.d.. The project will also involve cataloguing and storing amphibian DNA for future conservation biology studies. C.Period of Project: 3 years |
