The Bureau of Land Management – Utah – Vernal Field Office (BLM-UT-VFO) is offering this grant to replicate previous studies on water quality in the Big Wash, Castle Peak, and Pariette drainages, specifically the Pariette Wetlands. This grant is for evaluating whether contaminant levels, such as salinity and selenium, have changed over time and to establish a current baseline. The project aims to determine how elements like selenium are distributed among water, sediments, plants, and aquatic life within the wetland ecosystem. It also seeks to further scientific understanding of selenium partitioning, which is currently not well-understood. Furthermore, this initiative provides a unique opportunity for educational institutions to engage students in hands-on learning, training, and development in physical sciences and water resources within the Uintah Basin.

Description: | The purpose of this project is to replicate a study conducted in the 80’s and 90’s in the Big Wash, Castle Peak, and Pariette drainages and more specifically Pariette Wetlands to evaluate whether water quality contaminate levels have increased, decreased or remain the same. Furthermore the study should help provide a baseline to help determine how certain elements such as Se are partitioned between plants, water, sediments, and representative aquatic animal or waterfowl tissues. This study will provide a unique study opportunity for educational institutions to develop a regionally important study program benefiting federal, state, and private entities as well as provide hands on learning, training, and educational development opportunities for students in physical sciences and water resources in the Uintah Basin. This project will further the science and knowledge base of how Se is portioned in a wetland ecosystem, which is not well understood at this time. |
