Description: The Cedar City Field Office has funding available to work with a partner under the Colorado Plateau Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit to stimulate the restoration of the historic Sand Cliff Signatures and historic trail features of the Old Spanish Trail in Fremont Canyon, Iron County, Utah. This project will stimulate the study of and support the protection of historic inscriptions and trail features possibly associated with the Old Spanish Trail. This project will provide an opportunity for the recipient to enhance its cultural resource study and protection programs, and support outreach and technical education in the field of historic preservation. Through this opportunity, they will be able to increase their outreach and support to trail enthusiasts and volunteers.
Specific elements of the project include: recruiting volunteers, establishing contact with ancestors of the signatures, recording the inscriptions on an archaeological site form, recording the signatures with Close-Up Photogrammetric Techniques listed in BLM Technical Note 428 (Page 15), removing at least 20 modern inscriptions, conducting at least 25 acres of archaeological/trail survey in Fremont Canyon, conducting at least 5 acres of metal detecting, a public presentation to the local historical society and compilation of all of the work in a cultural resources report and journal article.
