This grant is for conducting a preliminary assessment of the swimming performance and behavior of specific sucker species found in the upper Colorado River and Platte River basins. The primary objective is to investigate the feasibility of utilizing the swimming performance of a common sucker species as a surrogate measure for the performance of other, potentially rarer, sucker species. This innovative approach seeks to mitigate the challenges associated with extensive laboratory testing on endangered or scarce populations. Ultimately, this research aims to develop a robust, less intrusive methodology for evaluating the physiological capabilities of these vital aquatic organisms, supporting more effective conservation and management strategies for the unique ecosystems within these significant river systems.
