The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is offering a grant for the 2017 Census of Medical Examiners and Coroners’ Offices (CMEC). This grant aims to collect and update vital operational information from approximately 2000 U.S. medical examiner and coroner offices, crucial for medico-legal death investigations. The selected recipient will manage the entire census process: updating the national ME/C roster, refining the data collection instrument, administering the survey, and delivering comprehensive final data files to BJS. The census will gather essential data on office staffing, including training and accreditation; resources such as budget, IT, and specialized laboratories; and workload details like case types and volume. It will also cover policies and procedures for critical functions, including disposition of remains, handling of unidentified decedents, and inter-office data sharing. This initiative will enhance understanding of the nation’s death investigation infrastructure.
