This grant, offered by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), is for the administration of the 2011 National Survey of Tribal Court Systems (NSTCS). The core purpose is to systematically gather crucial administrative and operational information from key components of tribal justice systems. This includes detailed data collection from tribal courts, prosecutors’ offices, and indigent defense providers currently operating within the estimated 200 federally-recognized tribal justice systems across the United States. The survey aims to provide a comprehensive overview, offering vital insights into the functions and needs of these critical legal entities within tribal communities, thereby informing policy and resource allocation efforts for tribal justice initiatives nationwide.
