Description:: | The Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program (GCDAMP) was established for the long-term preservation and management of the cultural and natural resources of the Grand Canyon in accord with the Gran Canyon Protection Act of 1992 (GCPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended (NHPA). As a component of the GCDAMP, the Bureau of Reclamation, Upper Colorado River Region (Reclamation) is in the process of conducting nonnative fish removal efforts below Lees Ferry, AZ in the Colorado River to reduce the threat of predation on humpback chub, an endangered species. Several Indian Tribes have expressed concern over the taking of life in this culturally-important area and to address that issue the Hualapai Tribe has agreed to take possession of the nonnative fish after they are captured and transport them to fishing ponds where they will be stocked for fishing.
Since 1994 the Hualapai Tribe has been a consulting signatory to the GCDAMP, ensuring that tribal values are represented at the various program functions and to ensure effective government-to-government consultation on federal undertakings that may affect resources important to the Tribe. Therefore it is within the Hualapai Tribes discretion to accept these fish and dispose of them as they deem prudent. |
