This grant from the Bureau of Reclamation is dedicated to the Delta Smelt Refugium and Recovery Investigation program, aimed at critical conservation efforts. The primary purpose of this financial assistance is to continue the vital work of developing a delta smelt refugial population. This refugium serves as an essential safeguard against the species’ extinction in the wild. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to establish a genetically sound population of captive fish, which will be instrumental for ongoing research. The grant also supports conducting a series of scientific experiments, providing crucial insights into smelt physiology, health, condition, and behavior, ultimately bolstering recovery efforts for this imperiled species.
