Description: | The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) in Cameroon is to reduce HIV-related maternal and child mortality by scaling up high-quality Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) activities and strengthening treatment and care through the PMTCT platform. Specifically, it seeks to expand PMTCT coverage and improve uptake from approximately 34% to 90% in the Littoral and Center Regions of Cameroon, by integrating and scaling up PMTCT services into existing health facilities and promoting community-based PMTCT activities, including rolling out Option B+ following the national plans and guidelines. Cameroon has developed a national roll out plan. The national plan for phased-in Option B+ roll-out would cover 247 sites in the four PEPFAR-supported regions (500 sites nationwide) in 2014, 691 (1,500) sites in 2015, 1,141 (2,500) sites in 2016, and 1,379 (3,000) sites in 2017. Necessary training and site preparedness to roll out B+ would follow the same phase-in approach and would result in training 7,500 providers, including 3,447 at PEPFAR-supported sites. The model of PMTCT/ART service delivery to be implemented requires that HIV-positive pregnant women and mothers and their HIV-exposed or -infected infants receive their care and treatment at the mother-and-child unit until 24 months post-partum and then be referred to HIV care and treatment services for long-term treatment and follow-up (SDM 1). So far, only 22 sites in Cameroon where Option B+ is currently being piloted implement this model. All other sites, pending their enrollment as per the national Option B+ roll-out plan, are still implementing Option A, referring treatment-eligible pregnant women (CD4 < 350/mm3) to ART services to receive ART while continuing their follow-up at the MNCH service (SDM 2). Their HIV-infected children are also referred to the nearest ART site as soon as their HIV diagnosis is confirmed. These sites will switch to SDM1 in line with the B+ roll-out. |
