This grant is for the purpose of supporting an Acoustic Monitoring Project at Congaree National Park. It involves deploying and analyzing autonomous recording units (ARUs) in remote areas. The primary goal is to detect endangered avian species, including the Bachman’s Warbler and Ivory-billed Woodpecker, alongside other bird species of management concern. Congaree National Park aims to gather crucial data on these rare birds’ presence and distribution. This information will be vital for informing conservation strategies, improving habitat protection, and guiding future actions to safeguard vulnerable avian populations within the park’s unique ecosystem.

Additional Information on Eligibility: | This is a single source award to Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology contains well known experts in both design and methodology of acoustic recordings and assessing avian abundance, diversity, behavior, ecology, health, management, and conservation. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology uses new techniques and equipment that are not currently available for purchase. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has past experience in assisting the National Park Service in avian projects, and specifically Congaree National Park with projects involving acoustic monitoring for rare species. The Cooperator has demostrated track record for completion of projects on time and on budget with excellent quality. The cooperator maintains the largest collection of recorded bird vocalizations, and has the equipment, experience, expertise, and proven ability to conduct this type of research in an efficient and effective manner.
