Additional Information

Agency Name: Geological Survey
Description: The US Geological Survey, John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis, is offering a funding opportunity to evaluate the impact of storms on freshwater habitat and structure of phytoplankton assemblages. Existing long-term and high frequency data from lakes around the world will be gathered and standardized to ask questions about the impacts of storms on
Specific tasks include acquiring, evaluating, and publishing biological, physical, chemical and geographical data from USGS and other sources, developing an analytical framework supported by multivariate time-series analyses and meta-analyses. These approaches will be used to identify conditions under which storm-driven water column disturbances influence phytoplankton diversity, favoring some types of species over others; characterize changes in phytoplankton communities relative to metrics of lake physical states; and identify mechanisms that lead to new phytoplankton assemblages, or promote algal resilience to disturbance. Knowledge gained from the results may have application in determining and forecasting changes in trophic state that may lead to harmful algal blooms.
