Additional Information

Agency Name: Geological Survey
Description: This grant seeks research into modification of electronic map files viewing of maps as unique layers for analysis. These electronic map images will supplement and enhance the generation map graphics products by:
• Studying, evaluating, and determining best combinations of transparency/design of how
the images will work when viewed as multiple layers
• Evaluating color adjustments/corrections necessary, especially for USGS topographic maps
• Researching feasibility of on-line viewing as well as an off-line viewer, focusing on a non-proprietary approach
• Developing and testing non-proprietary software for viewing the map bundle and providing controls to the user to adjust and view the map layers
• Document any testing of procedures and results

The award recipient will research the scientific process and methods for image adjustments of georeferenced digital files. This includes requirements to view specific information of one map versus another, select which of the one or more maps is the fixed image and which is the one to adjust transparency – or if adjusting both is required. The research will determine the feasibility of using major historic collections of maps for basic and advanced geographic research.
