Additional Information

Agency Name: Georgia USAID-Tbilisi
Description: The goal of the “Georgian Media Enhance Democracy, Informed citizenry and Accountability” (G-MEDIA) program is to improve the public’s access to a range of sources of news and information by developing a more politically balanced, editorially independent, and professional media sector, able to deliver news, information, and analysis to audiences throughout the country. The title of the program reflects the end result of the project.

The program is designed to address the media’s shortcomings from two sides. First, it will address the internal functioning of the media as a sector, to build the capacity of the media to both police and defend itself; create more high quality, professional content; and build sustainable media enterprises. Second, it will address external factors, including the need to challenge any political and government institutions that impede media pluralism and independence, as well as society at large to demand better media that serves society as a whole instead of narrow interests.

Georgian media development assistance will be accomplished through four broad objectives, which directly support the Governing Justly and Democratically Assistance Objective: “Participatory Democracy and Democratic Governance Strengthened.”

1. Improve Quality and Diversity of Media Content and Broaden Channels of Delivery
2. Improve Professional Journalism
3. Improve the Regulatory Environment and Protect Journalists’ Rights
4. Improve Media Outlets’ Viability
