Additional Information

Agency Name: Fish and Wildlife Service
Description: Improving connectivity between the satellite populations and the Gunnison Basin is an important step for the recovery of Gunnison sage-grouse. Restoring connectivity between fragmented communities is important for recovery because it will help improve population demographics and gene flow that is needed to maintain species viability.

The project includes mechanically treating (mowing) areas of encroaching pinyon-juniper trees that currently have healthy established sagebrush understory within Gunnison sage-grouse habitat. In addition, the treatment will remove remnant tree skeletons that remain from fire where current understory exhibits sagebrush reestablishment. Mastication of trees will be accomplished using a Hydro-Axe. Other habitat treatment include zee-dike installation or other hydrological restoration activities.

The recipient will provide project specific details to the Service before project initiation to be reviewed and approved for National Historic Preservation Act Compliance.
