The Department of Defense (DOD) offers this Lung Cancer Investigator-Initiated Translational Research Award to support research aimed at rapidly moving promising lung cancer ideas into clinical applications. This grant is for translational research, defined as an integration of basic science with clinical observations. Observations driving research may stem from laboratory discoveries, population-based studies, or insights gained from a clinician’s direct patient experience. The ultimate goal is to accelerate these observations into practical clinical uses. While moving from ‘bench to bedside’ is a component, Principal Investigators should view translational research as a broader, dynamic continuum focused on effective translation for patient benefit.

Description: | The Lung Cancer Research Program Investigator-Initiated Translational Research Award supports translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in lung cancer into clinical applications. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinicians firsthand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data. While the ultimate goal of translational research is to move an observation forward into the clinical application, Principal Investigators (PIs) should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from bench to bedside. |
