The Department of Earthquake Hazards Program is offering the ShakeAlert 2019-2021 Grant to University of Nevada Reno to continue and enhance the operation of seismic and geodetic networks in high-risk areas of the U.S. This grant aims to improve earthquake warnings to reduce property damage and loss of life by testing the system, enhancing algorithms, expanding network coverage, and promoting private-sector applications. The University of Nevada Reno’s Advanced National Seismic System is integral to the ShakeAlert system’s expansion, demonstrating expertise in contributing seismic data and conducting seismic research for early warning systems. Closing date for applications is August 5, 2019.

| Description: | Notice of Intent to award a cooperative agreement to the University of Nevada Reno in support of the project entitled “ShakeAlert 2019-20201”. The main objective of this agreement is to continue and further the Earthquake Hazards Program’scollaborative research project to operate, support, improve and expand theability of seismic and geodetic networks in high-risk areas of the U.S. toprovide warnings of earthquakes when strong shaking has begun, so that property damage, injury, and loss of life canbe reduced in affected areas . This phase will support further testing of the system, improving seismicalgorithms, completing integration of geodetic algorithms, creation of tools tomonitor the system and manage users, expanding network coverage throughbuilding new stations and upgrading existing stations and associatedcommunications systems, encouraging private-sector creation of EEWapplications, and developing coordinated training and education. University of Nevada Reno operates an Advanced NationalSeismic System (ANSS) seismic network, included in the ShakeAlert system. TheNSL network is a crucial component of EEW, as it allows the ShakeAlert systemto expand to the more populated regions of eastern California. UNR hasdemonstrated ability to contribute seismic data for prototype system and carryout and apply related seismic research and development for early warning.
