The Department of Health is offering a grant to enhance early detection of community influenza by developing an influenza-like illness-specific absentee monitoring system. This project will investigate causes of school absenteeism in 4K-12 students, detect influenza transmission within households, and compare surveillance methods for influenza. The goal is to use school absenteeism as an early warning system for detecting influenza and other respiratory pathogens in the community. Closing date for applications is March 1, 2017.

Description: | The project aims at further developing and implementing an influenza-like illness (ILI)-specific absentee monitoring system and assessing its usability for early detection of influenza and other respiratory pathogens in the surrounding community. To achieve this aim, the project will: 1) rapidly determine the causes of school absenteeism in 4K-12 students across selected school district(s) over a four-year period, 2) detect within-household transmission of influenza in households from which a student has been absent from school due to ILI, and 3) assess comparability between surveillance based on influenza-specific absenteeism and multiple layers of complimentary influenza surveillance centered on this school district. |
