Additional Information

Agency Name:: National Park Service
Description:: The effects of noise on wildlife distribution and behavior will be investigated by broadcasting road noise into otherwise undisturbed habitat in an experimental study on public lands along the Boise Front, and conducting field observations under equivalent transportation noise regimes in a similar habitat in Grand Teton National Park. The responses of birds and bats to noise exposure will be measured in terms of foraging behavior, foraging success, population density, and community diversity. Acoustical monitoring will be used to document bird (audio) and bat (ultrasound) activity. Point counts will be used to document bird densities. Giving up prey density trials will be used to evaluate the effects of noise on anti-predator vigilance and foraging success in gleaning bats and avian ground insectivores.
This project will be issued as a task agreement, on a non-competitive basis to Boise State University under an existing Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit Agreement No H8R07060001. This is a notice of intent and non-competitive award in accordance with Department of Interior Policy, Department Manual 505DM2.
