The Department of Justice offers the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Act Record Improvement Program (NARIP) grant. This federal grant program, authorized by the NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007 (NIAA), aims to enhance the completeness and accuracy of records submitted to the NICS. Its primary purpose is to assist states in providing critical information to the NICS, thereby improving the effectiveness of background checks for firearms purchases. The program also outlines potential grant penalties for states that fail to meet the Act’s established record completeness goals, emphasizing accountability and the importance of accurate data for public safety. This grant is for states seeking to bolster their data submission efforts to the NICS database.
