This Department of the Interior grant supports the Hopi Tribe’s critical participation in developing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan (LTEMP) for Glen Canyon Dam operations. The Bureau of Reclamation and National Park Service are preparing this EIS to adaptively manage the dam for 15-20 years, aiming to enhance scientific understanding and protect downstream resources while ensuring legal compliance. This grant specifically enables the Hopi Tribe to provide essential cultural information for the EIS, covering background, affected environment, and environmental consequences. The Tribe will deploy its technical staff, Cultural Resources Advisory Task Team, and tribal members, involving meeting attendance and text development to ensure culturally informed EIS sections.

Description: | Notice of Intent to Award – The Department of the Interior, through the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the National Park Service (NPS) will prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the adoption of a long-term experimental and management plan (LTEMP) for the operation of Glen Canyon Dam. The EIS will fully evaluate dam operations and will provide the basis for decisions that identify management actions and experimental options that will provide a framework for adaptively managing Glen Canyon Dam over the next 15 to 20 years. The purpose of the proposed LTEMP is to increase scientific understanding of the ecosystem downstream from Glen Canyon Dam and to improve and protect important downstream resources while maintaining compliance with relevant laws including the Grand Canyon Protection Act (GCPA), the Law of the River, and the Endangered Species Act. The LTEMP EIS will be the first EIS on the operations of Glen Canyon Dam since the Glen Canyon Dam EIS (GCDEIS) and establishment of the Glen Canyon DAM Adaptive Management Program (GCDAMP).
It is anticipated that there are a number of the sections of the EIS that will require specific |
