The Department of the Interior is offering this grant to support State and Tribal agencies in regulating surface coal mining and the surface effects of underground coal mining. This grant is for assisting eligible State or Tribal agencies with permanent regulatory programs approved by the Secretary of the Interior, and jurisdiction over coal mining activities. It helps cover the operational costs of their approved programs, including issuing permits, inspecting operations, and enforcing laws. Funded cooperative agreements also enable approved States to regulate coal mining on Federal lands. Additionally, regulatory program development grants are available for States and Tribes with active coal mining but without an existing approved program. Please note, funding is not available to individuals.
