This grant from the Department of the Interior supports Southern Paiute participation in the development of a long-term experimental and management plan for the Glen Canyon Dam. The plan aims to enhance scientific understanding of the ecosystem downstream, protect vital resources, and ensure compliance with laws. It marks a significant step in the adaptive management of the dam, involving the traditional lands of the Southern Paiute people along the Colorado River. The grant seeks to engage the Southern Paiute community in shaping the future operations of the dam for the next 15 to 20 years.

| Description:: | Notice of Intent to Award – The Department of the Interior, through the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the National Park Service (NPS) will prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the adoption of a long-term experimental and management plan (LTEMP) for the operation of Glen Canyon Dam. The EIS will fully evaluate dam operations and will provide the basis for decisions that identify management actions and experimental options that will provide a framework for adaptively managing Glen Canyon Dam over the next 15 to 20 years. The purpose of the proposed LTEMP is to increase scientific understanding of the ecosystem downstream from Glen Canyon Dam and to improve and protect important downstream resources while maintaining compliance with relevant laws including the Grand Canyon Protection Act (GCPA), the Law of the River, and the Endangered Species Act. The LTEMP EIS will be the first EIS on the operations of Glen Canyon Dam since the Glen Canyon Dam EIS (GCDEIS) and establishment of the Glen Canyon DAM Adaptive Management Program (GCDAMP). The traditional lands of the Southern Paiute people are bounded by more than 600 miles of the Colorado River from the Kaiparowits Plateau in the north to Blythe, California in the south. Southern Paiute people were given a special responsibility to protect and manage this land and water and all that is upon and within it. |
