This Department of Transportation grant, offered via the Railroad Relocation and Improvement Program, is dedicated to rehabilitating 37 at-grade highway-rail crossings on the South Orient Rail Line in San Angelo, Texas. Utilizing $1,000,000, the project will replace existing wood and asphalt surfaces with concrete. Current crossings present significant safety and operational difficulties due to worn rail, aged ties, and structural deficiencies causing track deflection. The reconstruction includes new subgrade, drainage, ties, ballast, rail, and securements. This vital upgrade will enhance train operations and substantially reduce derailment likelihood, improving overall rail safety and efficiency.

| Description: | There are 37 at-grade highway-rail crossings in San Angelo, Texas, that will be reconstructed using $1,000,000 from the Railroad Relocation and Improvement Program and other funds. The existing at-grade highway-rail crossings include 33 wood surfaces, 2 asphalt surfaces, and 2 combination wood-asphalt surfaces. When completed, all 37 reconstructed crossings will have concrete surfaces.
The existing crossings present safety and operational difficulties to train operations. The majority of the crossings are constructed with 90# (or smaller) rail with cross ties dating from the 1950?s. The rail is severely worn at many spots and the underlying defective tie conditions allow significant vertical deflection of the track as well as gauge deviations when under load. Reconstructing the crossings with new subgrade, drainage, ties, ballast, rail, securements, and panels will improve train operations and greatly reduce the likelihood of derailments at these locations. |
