The Department of Defense is offering the Neurofibromatosis New Investigator Award to advance innovative, high-impact research, ultimately decreasing the clinical impact of Neurofibromatosis (NF). This grant supports fostering new directions, addressing neglected issues, and promoting multidisciplinary collaborations in NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis. It aims to develop the next generation of NF investigators and facilitate translational and clinical studies. Key research priorities include cognitive/social dysfunction, drug discovery, tumor heterogeneity via genomics, post-adolescence manifestations, novel disease markers (imaging, proteomics), and pain. This award is specifically designed for promising independent investigators or established researchers transitioning into the NF field. Applicants must provide relevant preliminary or published data; collaboration with experienced NF researchers is encouraged if their background is limited.

Description: | The vision of the FY13 NFRP is to decrease the clinical impact of NF. Toward this end, the NFRP seeks to support innovative, high-impact research that will foster new directions for and address neglected issues in NF research; sponsor multidisciplinary and multi-institutional collaborations that will bring new perspectives to the field; foster the next generation of NF investigators; promote translational and clinical studies to move promising ideas from bench to bedside; develop a balanced portfolio of meritorious research related to all aspects of NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis. Areas of Emphasis: The FY13 NFRP strongly encourages research applications that specifically address the critical needs of the NF community in one or more of the following Areas of Emphasis: Cognitive and social dysfunction in the setting of NF; Drug discovery for the treatment of NF; Heterogeneity of neurofibromas and other NF-related tumors using genomics, epigenetics, systems biology, or other similar approaches; Manifestations of NF post-adolescence; Novel disease markers such as imaging and proteomics of NF; Pain in the setting of NF. The intent of the NFRP New Investigator Award is to support the continued development of promising independent investigators and/or the transition of established investigators into a career in the field of NF research. Experience in NF research is allowed, but not required. However, Principal Investigators (PIs) with a limited background in NF research are strongly encouraged to have a collaborator who is experienced in the NF field. New Investigator Award applications must include preliminary or published data that is relevant to NF and the proposed research project. |
