The Department of Energy (DOE) is calling for feedback from academia, research laboratories, and industry on next-generation photovoltaic technologies. The aim is to bridge the gap between theoretical and actual efficiency limits, surpassing the Shockley-Queisser limits, and addressing material and process obstacles. Insights gathered could pave the way for innovative methods or device structures that lower cell costs by enhancing efficiencies or using cost-effective materials/processes. This initiative seeks input on breakthrough PV cell technology topics with the potential to revolutionize the PV field in 10-20 years, enabling terawatt PV deployment. Respondents can contribute to shaping future Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) on the EERE Exchange website. (Closing Date: Aug 30, 2013)

| Description:: | The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking comments and information from members of academia, research laboraties and industry to assist DOE in understanding the research topics in next generation photovoltaic technologies that would aid in: narrowing the gap between theoretical and realized device efficiency limits; exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limits; overcoming materials and process barriers. The knowledge gained from these research efforts may lead to methods or device structures that can facilitate the deployment of photovoltaics through reduced cell costs achieved by increased cell efficiencies or cost effective materials/processes. This request for information (RFI) asks interested parties to provide information on topic areas in innovative, transformative PV cell technology research which have high potential to be impactful to the PV landscape in 10-20 years, particularly those that will facilitate terawatt deployment of PV.
Although the DOE may determine as the result of this RFI to issue a formal Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), there is no guarantee that future funding opportunities or other activities will be undertaken as a result of this RFI. The full RFI is posted on the EERE Exchange website, http://eere-exchange.energy.gov/ |
