This Federal Public Health Grant aims to establish a sustainable network of US institutions. The primary purpose is to collect hospitalization data and generate accurate annual estimates of influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) in preventing influenza-associated hospitalizations among US adult populations. Participating institutions will collaboratively enroll adult hospitalized patients suffering from acute respiratory illness. Influenza infection will be confirmed using advanced laboratory-based molecular assays. The overall effectiveness of the vaccine will then be precisely estimated utilizing a robust test-negative study design. This initiative is crucial for enhancing public health surveillance and informing vaccine policy.

Description: | Purpose: Influenza is an important cause of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare burden across all age groups. Because influenza viruses are constantly changing and vaccines are reformulated every year, annual estimates of the effectiveness of influenza vaccines in preventing influenza infection and its associated complications are needed in order to evaluate the protection provided by annual, nationwide vaccination programs. The goal of this funding opportunity announcement is to establish a sustainable network of US institutions that can obtain hospitalization data and provide accurate estimates of annual influenza Vaccine Effectiveness (VE) so as to mitigate and prevent influenza-associated hospitalizations in US adult populations. Participating institutions will coordinate enrollment of adult hospitalized patients with influenza infection, confirm influenza infection status using sensitive laboratory-based molecular assays, and estimate VE using a test-negative study design. Annual VE estimates will be used to inform and assess the public health impact of influenza vaccination programs on the prevention of health-related complications due to influenza infection, especially in older adults. In addition, and as research data on VE becomes available, this network will allow comparison of VE data for specific vaccine types available in the US and provide service as an emergency response resource in the event of an influenza pandemic. Results from research under this funding opportunity should yield high impact public health findings and/or strategies that will contribute to a reduction in overall burden to healthcare and improve the health of the US population. |
