This agreement is being implemented in order to further the information knowledge base on the parasitic Nucleospora salmonis (Nsal) and its effects in fish species. The microsporidian parasite Nsal has been consistently detected in spawning adult Steelhead in Idaho and Lahontan cutthroat trout from Heenan Lake. Nsal was described several years ago in salmonid fish for California, principally from hatchery populations (Hendrick et al. 1990). Egg-associated transmission of this parasite will be investigated as well as examining the stressor of high density rearing which may be involved in clinical episodes of the disease. This project will benefit the public by increasing the knowledge of Nsal to enable better management decisions for species in restoration efforts and in recreational species desired by sportsman for fishing opportunities. |
