The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is offering this Alternatives Analysis Program grant, authorized by 49 U.S.C. 5339, to assist potential sponsors of New Starts and Small Starts projects. This grant is for the purpose of evaluating reasonable modal and multimodal transportation alternatives and general alignment options within defined travel corridors. FTA may allocate up to $25.0 million from FY 2010 and 2011 funds for selected activities. Funded alternatives analyses include assessing a wide range of public transportation solutions, developing essential information for project justification and local financial commitment, selecting a locally preferred alternative, and integrating it into long-range transportation plans. Funds support technical work within ongoing analyses to inform decision-makers, but are not available for initial systems planning or post-application engineering phases.
