This grant from Glacier National Park is designed to establish a new visitor use monitoring system, crucial for the park’s transition to an adaptive visitor management system. As the Going-to-the-Sun Road rehabilitation project concludes, this initiative will support the development of a comprehensive backcountry and wilderness stewardship plan for Glacier National Park. It will also facilitate collaboration with the Flathead National Forest on a new Comprehensive Wild and Scenic River Management Plan. University of Montana faculty, in conjunction with Glacier National Park managers, will develop this essential monitoring framework during FY16, ensuring data-driven decision-making to complement existing GTSR corridor monitoring efforts since 2005.

Description: | As the Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR) rehabilitation project nears completion, Glacier National Park (Glacier) must prepare for a transition to a potential adaptive visitor management system. Part of that transition will be to prepare a new backcountry and wilderness stewardship plan for the park and to work with the Flathead National Forest on developing a new Comprehensive Wild and Scenic River Management Plan. This project will assist the park management in preparing for both planning efforts. During FY16 University of Montana faculty and managers of Glacier National Park will develop a system of visitor use monitoring that will complement the monitoring that has occurred within the GTSR corridor since 2005. |
