The Climate Change Adaptation Program (GPAP) is offering this grant to address the critical impacts of global climate change on Peru’s water resources. With melting glaciers and shrinking highland wetlands (paramos) leading to reduced water availability and increased Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risks, this grant aims to stimulate vital adaptation projects. Its purpose is to assist indigenous mountain communities, rural and urban populations, and local and regional governments in Peru who are vulnerable to these climate-induced challenges. Successful projects will develop long-term, sustainable strategies that effectively reduce the adverse effects of climate change on glaciated and highland wetland ecosystems, safeguarding the communities dependent on these essential services.

Description: | One important effect of global climate change is the reduction in naturally stored water resources which, for Peru, means melting glaciers and a decrease in the size of highland wetlands (paramos). The loss of these areas decreases water availability for upland and lowland communities and increases the potential for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). This APS seeks to stimulate adaptation projects that assist indigenous mountain communities, rural and urban areas, and local and regional governments potentially affected by GLOFs or changes in water availability. General project outcomes will be long-term, sustainable approaches that help reduce the impact of climate change on glaciated and highland wetland ecosystems and on those that depend on these ecosystems’ services. |
