The Grand Canyon National Park Service is offering this grant to evaluate the effectiveness of humpback chub translocations and native fish community restoration efforts within Grand Canyon tributaries, specifically Shinumo, Havasu, and Bright Angel Creeks. This grant is for the purpose of conducting critical research to understand the ecological impacts and success of these conservation initiatives. Researchers will assess fish community differences, analyze changes pre and post non-native fish removal, and determine the number of remaining translocated humpback chub, identifying factors influencing their outmigration, such as season, flows, temperature, and handling. Furthermore, the project aims to estimate survival and growth rates for translocated chub and investigate whether native fish species are successfully occupying niches left vacant by removed non-native fish populations. This research is vital for informing future native fish conservation strategies.

| Additional Information on Eligibility: | This is a "Notice of Intent" of a single source task agreement award to the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri under the Great Rivers Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU). The cooperator for this project was chosen because of the unique ability. The PI is the lead principal investigator, has extensive experience conducting fisheries research in the Great Plains and Colorado River Basin including Grand Canyon. The PI has ongoing research on conservation of fish in the Colorado River Basin and has a strong interest in evaluating the recovery of humpback chub, including through translocations. The PI was selected as the lead PI due to the extensive knowledge of the fishes of Grand Canyon, previous research experience in the Colorado River Basin and Grand Canyon, and demonstrated ability to produce science-based products to aid in conservation and recovery efforts. |
Additional Information
| Agency Name: | National Park Service |
| Description: | The purpose of this agreement is to determine 1) how does the fish community differ in Shinumo, Havasu, and Bright Angel Creeks, 2) how does the fish abundance and community differ pre and post non-native removal, 3) how many humpback chub remain in tributaries following translocations, and what factors influence outmigration (season, flows, water temperature, handling, etc.), 4) what is the estimated/modeled survival and growth rates for translocated humpback chub, and what factors may influence survival, and 5) do humpback chub or other sizes/species of native fish fill a niche vacated by non natives fishes. |
