Additional Information

Agency Name: National Park Service
Description: The goal of this project is to provide an opportunity for students, volunteers, and/or interns to work side-by-side with experienced historic preservation professionals to gain hands-on experience in the practice of historic preservation through the repair and preservation of wood frame and adobe components of the historic Enlisted Men¿s Barracks.
The expected end result of this project will be to increase the knowledge and understanding of the participants in the underpinnings of historic preservation philosophy and to provide hands-on training and experience in historic preservation-specific skills, especially as they apply to wood frame and adobe construction. This will be accomplished by having the participants execute an actual preservation project on a historic resource. Specifically, they will learn techniques for assessing adobe wood frame condition; they will manufacture and install new adobe bricks to repair deteriorated and collapsed adobe walls, reconstruct missing sections of wall, and learn carpentry techniques for repairing and stabilizing wood frame construction. This work will be carried out on the remains of the Enlisted Men¿s Barracks at the Indian War-era Fort Davis.
