Agency Name: Bureau of International Security-Nonproliferation
Description: ISN/CTR administers the Partnership for Nuclear Threat Reduction Program (PNTR). The PNTR team functions as the State Department’s programmatic lead for the Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) program, a Presidential initiative announced by the White House in April 2021. FIRST provides technical capacity-building support to potential nuclear energy newcomer countries that are considering small modular reactors (SMRs) and other advanced reactor designs to meet their clean energy needs, consistent with the highest international standards of nuclear security, nonproliferation, and safety. In addition, PNTR works to prevent states or terrorists from diverting or acquiring nuclear material, technology, or expertise that could be used to attack the United States and our allies.
