Additional Information on Eligibility: Proposals will be accepted from non-profit organizations, state-based educational leadership organizations, and U.S. school districts that provide and deliver summer or other out-of-school learning programs, and that can demonstrate positive impact measures between their program and improved student academic learning and/or STEM career exploration. Community colleges, universities, industry, education-related companies, and other institutions may apply in partnership with the lead applying organization which is the eligible primary awardee. The proposer must have in place documented evidence of ongoing, successful, out-of-school experiences that are directly relevant to the specific categories of interest indicated in this CAN.

Description: The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Office of Education issues this Cooperative Agreement Notice (CAN) to focus on summer and other out-of-school learning programs with documented, positive impact on student academic achievement and/or STEM career exploration. The 2010 K-12 Summer of Innovation (SoI) Capacity Building Cooperative Agreement Notice (CAN) provides an opportunity for non-profit organizations, state-based educational leadership organizations, and U.S. school districts that provide and deliver summer or other out-of-school learning programs and that can demonstrate strong impact measures between their program and improved student academic learning or career exploration to propose to this CAN. The proposal will describe the current program and the potential for adapting the program model to integrate NASA-supported career activities and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) content and engage middle school students with special interest on underrepresented and underserved populations.The CAN will consider proposals from summer and other out-of-school programs that address the following SoI categories of interest:• Student Achievement Impact The summer or out-of-school program has provision of data/evidence related to a positive correlation between student program participation and academic achievement in the subsequent, follow-on school year. • STEM Career ExplorationThe summer or out-of-school program has provision of data/evidence that supports a positive correlation between student program participation and STEM career exploration in the subsequent, follow-on school year. • Potential to Build Program Capacity The summer or out-of-school program has the potential for adaptation to a model for middle school students with special interest in participation of underserved and underrepresented youth; in strengthening the bridge between out-of-school and in-school learning; in infusing NASA-supported career activities and content; and in documenting and measuring outcomes.
