The National Institute on Aging is offering a grant to support revision applications for collecting DNA from older adult participants in Africa engaged in the SAGE and INDEPTH surveys. The goal is to ensure DNA specimens are available for future analysis and genotyping, preserving the integrity of the original sampling frame. This grant focuses on addressing attrition issues and maintaining data quality in longitudinal aging studies in Africa supported by NIA, promoting harmonization with global health surveys and enhancing research opportunities for qualified scientists. Application deadline is March 4, 2014.

Additional Information
| Agency Name:: | National Institutes of Health |
| Description:: | The purpose of this FOA is to support revision applications proposing to collect DNA from older adult (age 50+) participants from African nations involved in the World Health Organization-supported surveys Study on global AGEing and Adult Health (SAGE) and the International Network for the Demographic Evaluation of Populations and their Health in Developing Countries (INDEPTH). Both SAGE and INDEPTH (supported in part by NIA) are longitudinal surveys in developing countries in Africa that have archived and shared their data in ways that facilitate their use by qualified researchers. Crucially, these two studies include processes to harmonize social and behavioral phenotypes with those collected by the NIA-supported Health and Retirement Study (HRS) family of surveys around the world. The importance of timely DNA collection from these NIA-supported cohorts is to ensure that specimens are available for future analysis or genotyping from a sample that is as close to the original sampling frame as possible. Because attrition is often selective and data from the study would not be missing at random, failure to collect DNA early in such studies can compromise the interpretability of future analyses. |
