The National Institutes of Health is offering this grant to support critical research aimed at improving the HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) care continuum for people who use substances. This grant is for the purpose of addressing significant challenges in PrEP awareness, uptake, and adherence, which remain suboptimal despite PrEP’s proven efficacy in preventing HIV transmission. Projects funded through this initiative will delve into systemic and structural factors that either hinder or facilitate access to and sustained use of PrEP among this vulnerable population. The ultimate goal is to develop, implement, and rigorously evaluate effective, tailored strategies that meet the specific needs of people who use substances, thereby enhancing their engagement throughout the PrEP care continuum and ultimately reducing new HIV infections.

Additional Information
Agency Name: | National Institutes of Health |
Description: | Pre-exposure prophylaxis, also known as PrEP, is a safe, highly effective medication for preventing transmission of HIV from sex or injection drug use. Despite PrEPs high efficacy and its availability for over a decade, the awareness, uptake, and adherence of PrEP, especially among people who use substances remain suboptimal. The goal of this concept is to support research to examine and address systemic and structural factors that impede or facilitate the PrEP awareness, uptake, and adherence, among people who use substances. Projects will develop, implement, and evaluate effective strategies that meet the needs of people who use substances to improve the PrEP care continuum. |
