OVERVIEW

This project will document the history of the African-American experience in Alaska, beginning with the earliest known African-American visitors to or residents of the territory that would become a state. The product of this initial phase of the project will provide an overall historic context for multiple stories and biographical portraits. The context will highlight National Park Service places and connections, including Arctic whalers from New Bedford/Iñupiat Heritage Center Affiliated Area; Buffalo Soldiers in Skagway/Klondike Gold Rush Historical Park, and several World WWII National Historic Landmarks. In addition, the study may provide recommendations for places that could be investigated for eligibility/listing on the National Register of Historic Places. It will benefit the public by recording and sharing a little-known history.
