This National Park Service (NPS) grant aims to control invasive non-native brown trout populations within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, specifically in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam. This three-year research program will assess the efficacy of an incentivized harvest program designed to mitigate the significant threat brown trout pose to the endangered humpback chub, found downstream in Grand Canyon National Park. The Cooperative Agreement with the Glen Canyon Conservancy will support the administration of this complex program. Key initiatives include facilitating guided fishing trips for Tribal youth and elders, managing the collection of trout heads and angling data for reward payments to participating anglers, and organizing targeted brown trout tournaments with incentive awards. This grant is crucial for protecting native aquatic ecosystems.

Description: | The objective of this Agreement is to facilitate invasive species control while conducting a three year research program into the efficacy of the incentivized harvest program for managing an increasing population of non-native brown trout in the Glen Canyon Reach of the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam. These brown trout are an increasing and imminent danger to humpback chub, a species listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, with populations downriver in Grand Canyon National Park. This Cooperative Agreement with the Glen Canyon Conservancy will facilitate the Recipient assisting the NPS in administering a complex program for scheduling, directing, and making necessary payments to Tribal and public individuals assisting within the 3 main program areas of the Incentivized Harvest Program. These program areas include: 1) Guided fishing trips for Tribal youth from affiliated Tribes with Tribal elders assisting and sharing Tribal values; 2) storing collected fish heads and data cards and then making payments for Incentivized Harvest rewards to anglers who turn in trout heads and angling information on the fish they harvest; and 3) Organizing tournaments specifically targeting brown trout in the Glen Canyon Reach of the river and providing incentive awards. |
