Additional Information

Agency Name: National Park Service
Description: OVERVIEW
The Northern Great Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network (NGPN) has collected five years of landbird monitoring data at Network parks. The University of Delaware has been working with the National Park Service I&M program since 2007 and has the demonstrated expertise to summarize avian data and conduct power analyses to determine if the data are meeting stated monitoring objectives.

STATEMENT OF JOINT OBJECTIVES/PROJECT MANAGEMENT PLAN
Objectives:
The goals and objectives, are:
1. To estimate the proportion of sites occupied (occupancy estimates) for most breeding bird species at most of the Network parks.
2. To determine changes over time in community dynamics such as species richness and avian composition.
3. To estimate changes in the density when feasible for the most common breeding landbirds at most of the Network parks.
4. To incorporate changes in land cover, vegetation and associated parameters into the assessment of bird population trends.
5. To determine if current sampling meets objective (power analysis) and if future sampling would need to be modified to meet objectives.
6. Provide parks critical and current information for education and outreach efforts.

Outcomes and Significance:
The outcomes and significance of this proposal, include:
Provide a set of robust analytical tools (R code) that can be utilized for efficient analysis and annual reporting of landbird monitoring results.
1. Provide a comparison summary of relevant R and other software packages to guide NGPN staff on selection among analytical options.
2. Provide a document and supplemental material guiding the NGPN on the use of the provided analytical tools and interpretation of results.
3. To ensure R code and supplemental material meet NGPN needs and to help train NGPN and staff in use of this code, provide assistance and input into NPS personnel’s analysis
4. Provide a Natural Resource Report for publication through the NPS Report Series
5. Develop and share R Markdown files to aid in standardizing and automating annual reporting of the NGPN bird monitoring.
