The National Park Service (NPS) is offering this grant for the critical purpose of facilitating repatriation efforts under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). This grant aims to support the transfer of control of Native American human remains and cultural items to their rightful lineal descendants, Indian tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations. It also covers the disposition of culturally unidentifiable human remains, adhering to federal regulations (43 CFR § 10.11). Grant funds are specifically intended to defray various essential costs associated with these repatriation projects, including expenses for packaging, transportation, contamination removal, reburial, and long-term storage of NAGPRA-related human remains and cultural items. This initiative underscores a commitment to honoring indigenous heritage.
