This grant, offered by the National Park Service and the University of Arizona, provides an immersive archeology program for twelve Latino high school students and three teachers. Its goal is to teach about Hispanic contributions to the American Southwest’s culture. Students will gain hands-on experience through visits to nine National Park units and various heritage sites, alongside fieldwork and lab work at the University of Arizona. This initiative exposes them to scientific and National Park Service careers, often their first National Park visit, expanding professional horizons. Participants will also use iPads for data collection and reporting.

Description: | Twelve Latino high school students and three teachers will be introduced to archeology as a means of understanding Hispanic contributions to the settlement and culture of the American Southwest. Visits to nine National Park units and several Hispanic heritage and American Indian sites will broaden the context of Hispanic interactions in the region. Work on the archeological site and additional time spent in the six archeology labs at the University of Arizona will provide a range of scientific careers for them to consider. Students will also be exposed to careers within the National Park Service and meet with Latino staff in those parks. For most of the students it will be their first visit to a National Park and perhaps the first time they could broaden their consideration of scientific careers through hand-on learning. Students will also use iPads to collect data and produce reports and videos. A final report on the project will be produced and delivered to the NPS and Desert Southwest CESU. |
