The National Science Foundation (NSF) is offering the Centers for Chemical Innovation (CCI) Grant to support research centers tackling fundamental chemical research challenges. CCIs are dynamic structures that promote transformative research, innovation, and collaboration across various sectors. These centers integrate research, education, and outreach, aiming to engage underrepresented groups. The grant comprises two phases, with Phase I focusing on developing the CCI framework for subsequent Phase II funding. The FY 2013 competition prioritizes projects related to Sustainable Chemistry, Cyberinfrastructure, and Materials Science. Eligible applicants include organizations with Phase I awards from 2010 seeking Phase II funding in 2013, as well as existing Phase II CCIs from 2008. Applications are due by October 23, 2012.

Description:: | The Centers for Chemical Innovation (CCI) Program supports research centers focused on major, long-term fundamental chemical research challenges. CCIs that address these challenges will produce transformative research, lead to innovation, and attract broad scientific and public interest. CCIs are agile structures that can respond rapidly to emerging opportunities and make full use of cyberinfrastructure to enhance collaborations. CCIs may partner with researchers from industry, government laboratories and international organizations. CCIs integrate research, innovation, education, and informal science communication and include a plan to broaden participation of underrepresented groups. The CCI program is a two-phase program. Both phases are described in this solicitation. Phase I CCIs receive significant resources to develop the science and integrative elements of a CCI before requesting Phase II funding. Phase I proposals funded in FY 2013 will seek Phase II funding in FY 2016. Only organizations receiving Phase I awards in FY2010 are eligible to request new Phase II funding in FY 2013. This solicitation is also open to the renewal of Phase II CCIs initiated in FY 2008.The FY 2013 CCI competition is open to projects in fields supported by the NSF Division of Chemistry. Projects responsive to current priorities in Sustainable Chemistry, Engineering and Materials (SusChEM), Cyberinfrastructure Framework for the 21st Century (CIF-21) and Cyber-enabled Materials, Manufacturing and Smart Systems (CEMMSS) are particularly encouraged. |
