Additional Information

Agency Name: NAVAIR
Description: The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Patuxent River Education Outreach Grant Program offers an opportunity for non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable, educational, and scientific organizations with Partnership Intermediary Agreements in place with the NAWCAD to submit a grant application to execute “STEM Day 2014,” a community outreach and engagement event.

This grant is designed to increase early and persistent pursuit of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education from grade 5-8 students in the St. Mary’s, Charles, and Calvert Counties of Southern Maryland. This one-year grant program is funded not to exceed $10,000.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION
The specific goal of this grant is to instantiate a joint student and parent engagement that introduces all participants to STEM. The event directly links classroom theory to real world problems and demonstrates how such theory is implemented practically in the resolution of real world problems. STEM Day 2014 is aimed at both students and parents in order to provide a comprehensive approach to currently known barriers that prevent early awareness and a persistent following of STEM through higher education. Finally, the event enables parents’ support roles by generating awareness of local educational programs, financial aid resources and insight into proven studying methods that will enable a future STEM education for their kids.

The following is a summary of the elements included in a STEM Day 2014 package:
• (6) 30 minute STEM demonstrations based on the Maryland Core Curriculum Math and Science learning objectives.
• (10) Hands on STEM based activities implemented through non-traditional and immersive educational methods.
• (2) Parent workshops that highlight available educational and financial resources that support student STEM pursuits.
• Necessary logistics coordination that include, but are not limited to, a St. Mary’s County based facility, meals, child safety needs and volunteers.

Submission Requirements
The proposal should:
(1) Contain an executive summary not to exceed one page;
(2) Describe your organization’s qualifications; and
(3) Describe your organization’s past experience related to STEM;
(4) Describe the organization’s facilities and how they will be used to support STEM Day 2014.
(5) In 10 pages or less describe a plan to execute a “STEM Day” by March 15, 2014 or other agreed upon date.
